Do you ever walk down the street and wonder about all the people walking past you? Why are they all here and where have they come from? What is their life story? I often do. I try to figure people out in my head; what makes them tick? Each person is different and that’s what makes it exciting. Thinking about other people and watching them live their lives is something i do to escape from the reality of my own life. I use it as a technique to unwind and release myself from anything that troubles my mind. Occupying my mind with something totally unrelated to my own life, is surprisingly refreshing. But why?

Throughout our lives, it becomes obvious what we are good at and what we are no so good at.  We focus on the things we are good at to avoid failure.  But perhaps we are only approaching failure; in a much different way than expected.

In the beginning, it is something we enjoy but after a while it becomes a chore because we put so much effort into this one activity we seem to be good at and it occupies our mind, our thoughts, dreams, conversations.  And eventually it becomes the only thing in our lives that we have.

But what happens when we fail at this activity that has been the pillar of our lives for so long? It becomes too much of a good thing and eventually we see it as a chore. Therefore we only put in a half hearted effort and we don’t get the results we had for so long taken for granted.  This is when our lives fall apart and you begin to ask; what happened? Where did I go wrong? And you start doubting your abilities. When really it is not your ability that you should be doubting, but it is your focus and approach to the situation that you should be doubting.

The situation I just described can occur in all areas of our life;  jobs, hobbies, sports, relationships.

And that is why it is important to unwind from the stress of everyday life. You need something to take your mind off what you’re trying to achieve and focus on something totally unrelated to anything in your life. You’ll find it will refresh you, and rekindle your motivation for your goals. The way I see it is that everyone needs a breath of fresh air (not literally).

You need to find an activity that is suited to you. Because a huge passion of mine is people, I enjoy watching people when I need a release.  You may need to go on a holiday, listen to some music or go for a run. As long as it gives you an opportunity to experience something different in your life and gets your mind off everyday life.

Have you had too much of a good thing? What did it result in? How did you escape from it?

What do you do to unwind?

What do you do to clear your thoughts?

I’m interested in hearing your thoughts, so have your say in the box below.
