A mental health charity, called Mind, has released a statement claiming that our goals for the New Year could actually do us more harm than good. How could that possibly be the case? Setting goals are a good thing, right? According to Mind, it depends on what we make our new years resolutions about. There are a lot of different types of goals such as those that focus on physical things or goals that aim for personal development. Have you ever wondered why making your goals have made you feel worse than you felt before they made them? Perhaps you have been focusing on the wrong type of goals.... Read More

Crying is something we do when we are sad, but i have often wondered whether there is any benefit to shedding some tears over something that has made us upset. Obviously when we are infants, we gain food, love, and attention when we cry but why do we continue to cry over situations, people and emotions throughout our entire life eventhough we receive no direct benefit? There has to be a purpose to the act of crying, otherwise we wouldn’t continue to do it throughout our lives. Recent research conducted at the University of South Florida provides an answer to this question. The findings suggest that crying is a benefit to us, but it depends upon the what, where and when a particular crying episode occurs.... Read More

It’s that time of year when we have all started shopping for Christmas Gifts. We rush around the shops, stressing about what we are going to buy for friends, family and work colleagues. Buying presents over christmas becomes a chore; something that we have to get done by the cut off date. Researchers at the University of Michigan have found that we should perhaps be taking a different approach to gift giving.... Read More

Holidays. We all love them, right? We spend our lives dreaming about a vacation and they are often seen as a luxury; something that we could do without in our lives (particularly during these hard financial times where our budgets become really tight, a holiday is the first thing to be sacrificed). After spending four days on an island just off the mainland of my hometown, Brisbane, i began wondering whether holidays have an affect on our psychological well being. I began thinking about the people who don’t get away from the buzz of everyday life and how their stress levels would compare to a person who detaches themselves from work and spends that crucial time with their friends and family to unwind and refresh their minds.... According to Dr. William Fishbein, a cognitive neuroscientist at the City University of New York, “Not only do we need to remember to sleep, but most certainly we sleep to remember.” Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night, randomly remembering that thing you were supposed to have done last week but totally forgot to do? Or have you ever woken up with a great idea for your next blog post/book/assignment or a great solution to a problem you have been trying to fix. Recent studies on how sleep helps the brain process memories may provide an answer to why these random thoughts come to us during our sleep.... Read More

I’d just like to share an article i found on Psychology Today, because it is highly relevant to a post I wrote about The Costs of Living in the Future. I truly believe that people will become much happier if they stop worrying about what has to be done tomorrow, or what they have on next week; and care more about what they have in the here and now. But how do you push all those thoughts and worries out of your mind? ... Read More

Everyone wants to be or aspires to be the best possible person they can be.  But when we get caught up trying to be perfect in everything we do, we only get disappointed when we don’t perform as well as we had hoped.  That is why it is important to know and understand who you are, so that you don’t have unrealistic expectations of yourself....
